Rebecca Wight was a graduate student at Virginia Tech University obtaining her Masters degree in Business Administration. Her partner, Claudia Brenner, was an architecture student who had just returned from studying abroad. They met years before while planning a "women's week" at Virginia Tech University. The women were spending a weekend together in the Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania on the Appalachian Trail when they were shot at eight times by a man named Stephen Roy Carr.
