Addition to the Appalachian Trail

On November 10, 1974, a marker was erected by the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), Post 5311 of Christiansburg, Virginia, near the crash site on Brush Mountain. Memorial services honoring Murphy and other veterans are conducted at this site on most Veterans Day’s by the VFW, Virginia Tech Corp of Cadets as well as other local groups. In 1991, the Appalachian trail was rerouted, incorporating Brush Mountain into the trail, which allowed it to pass by the memorial site. No real reason was made for the trail to travel by the memorial site other than the fact that the site, in which the memorial is located, offered a spectatcular view of the surounding landscape. Today this section of the trail is maintained by the Roanoke Appalachian Trail Club which maintains the trail, as well as, the signage set to inform hikers of the Audie Murphy Memorial site.
