Inspired by the Trail
One of the biggest factors in getting a first tattoo is the idea of it being symbolic and important. The tattoo, for many people, needs to have some kind of significant meaning to be permanently placed on their body. With that in mind it makes sense why something as challenging as thru-hiking the Applachian Trails would be the inspiration for many tattoos.
Like many people hiking the Appalachian Trail was one of the most sacred experiences for one hiker named Sassy. Hiking the Appalachian Trail changed her life and inspired her entire tattoo. After interviewing her this is what she had to say about her tattoo:
"I have a great deal of symbolism in my tattoo. The Appalachian Trail was one of the most amazing and challenging experiences of my life. I wanted this tattoo to represent the importance this trail holds in my heart.
The Triangle:
- The Greeks believed the Triangle represented a doorway. Therefore the tattoo is a doorway to my experience. The AT itself was also a doorway into me. During my time on trail I also entered a new way of life.
- The triangle in this position also represents the female; for me this is Mother Nature.
The Sunrise:
- The sunrise is the start, the beginning. The Appalachian Trail was the beginning of a vast journey. A journey of miles, adventure, and an entire life. The AT was my first long distance trail, but I have since been on 2 others and have plans for endless more.
The Tree:
- This is a spring time tree. Again. This is the time everything is first in bloom and beginning. It is a time of awaking and discovery. On the Trail I learn a great deal, both about myself and the world. For myself and many others it resorts faith in humanity. The amount of love and car I received during my thru-hike was awe-inspiring.
The Mountains:
- Mountains are the Appalachian Trail. Being on the trail means going up and down everyday. It is testing your body and will power.
Rhododendrons:
- The trail turned these shrubs into one of my favorite flowers. Tunnels of these plants line the trail. The AT is affectionately called the “Green Tunnel.” Much of the tunnel is made of these beautiful plants with these pink flowers.
I always knew I wanted a tattoo. I’ve floated around a lot of smaller ideas that didn’t stick. I want my tattoos to hold meaning and importance. The AT has been the most important experience of my life."
