Story Tellers

Ray Hicks

Ray Hicks, Appalachian storyteller.

As long as there have been hikers on the Appalachian Trail, the stories of their adventures have also been passed along in the oral tradition. Story tellers such as Jonah McDonald and Kyle Jozsa interpret and weave tales of their adventures and about the people they meet along the way. There is even a play about Grandma Gatewood (the first woman through hiker) entitled "Trail Magic"

There are other oral histories of life along the trail. The Appalachian Oral History Project is an online co-operative effort between Emory and Henry College, Appalachian State University, Alice Lloyd College, and Hazard Community and Technical College to record and preserve the unique experience of life in Appalachia.
