Great Smoky Road Plan is Opposed
Description:
Article in theĀ Baltimore Sun, December 19, 1965 about opposition to what was then known a the "Transmountain road" through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This project was opposed by a coalition of conservation groups, including the Appalachian Trail Conference, several local trail clubs, and the Wilderness Society, among others. Two years later, Secretary of the Interior Stewart L. Udall announced that he had decided to not approve the project, despite strong support in Congress.
